The passage is the tunnel underneath the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. It’s a bike path, walkway and the museum’s entrance. In winter the just before sunset the sun lines up with the tunnel and the light shines all the way through.

The drawing was made with black fountain pen and coloured pencils in a B5 sized sketchbook. The print is sized so that the drawing is reproduced as close as possible to the actual drawing’s size.

Description

Rijksmuseum Passage

The Rijksmuseum passage connects the city center with the Museum Square and the south part of the city. It’s always a busy and often crowded thoroughfare. For Amsterdam locals it’s their bike route to and from work or shopping. For tourists and museum visitors it’s the area where many of the city’s main museums are located.

On sunny winter’s days the sun’s rays shine beautifully through the length of the tunnel. The large Museum Square at the south is one of the places in the city that catches most sun until the end of the day.

The Rijksmuseum was built in the 1880s on building land provided by the city of Amsterdam. In return, the city set the condition that a public passage to the new neighbourhoods south of the museum would be included in the building. The passage became an important and well used route for pedestrians, cyclists and cars. In 1931 cars were banned because the vibrations they caused would damage the building. A proposal to allow trams go through the passage was visualised but never materialised.

There have been several attempts to close the passage for cyclists. The last one during the museum’s renovation in the 2010s, which proposed to entirely close the passage. After protests the plans were changed and the passage remains open.
